Test Taking Tips For ADHD Students

With the end of the school year comes end of grade testing. This can be very stressful for your child. Although many children with ADHD are extremely bright, they often have weak cognitive skills which makes test taking very difficult. Therefore, the test results may not accurately reflect your child's true intellectual ability.

You can take some steps to help your child or students with ADHD prepare for upcoming tests.

If you child has an IEP or 504 with testing accommodations, make certain all of the teachers are aware of these accommodations and are ready to implement them on the day of the test.

Don't wait until the last minute to study for the test. Break down the material and do short study sessions daily.

Make certain you are studying the right material. Meet with the teacher and make certain you and your child understand what will be covered on the test. You don't want to spend a lot of time studying the wrong material.

Review the format of each test with your child ahead of time. Will the test be essays, multiple choice, or short answer?

Practice reading instructions and answers. Stress the importance of reading the instructions and multiple choice answers in their entirety before proceeding.

Discuss the importance of reviewing your answers prior to turning in the test.

Make certain your child gets a good night rest the night before a big test.

Your child should have always have a good breakfast, however it's especially important on test day.

Keep up with your Play Attention sessions! Play Attention strengthens the cognitive skills that are necessary to be a good learner!

Sharing Time

Breakfast & Attention

We are all rushed in the morning. It can be difficult getting everyone out the door in a timely manner. Even though you may be in a hurry make certain that you and your child take the time to have breakfast! It truly is an important part of your day!

A study conducted by Harvard researchers found that students who ate breakfast were "…significantly more attentive in the classroom, earned higher grades in math, and had significantly fewer behavioral and emotional problems." If children who eat breakfast perform better in school, then you can imagine the positive effect it will have on you in the workplace.

Some breakfast tips:

The night before place items on the table that you and your child may need for breakfast. Items may include plates, bowls, silverware, juice glasses, cold cereal etc. If these items are on the table in the morning, your child can simply grab what they need instead of asking you to get everything for them.Limit your child’s choices to three items so there is not a lot of time spent debating what to eat.

Choose breakfast items that contain some protein and fiber. Avoid serving sugary cereals and white breads. Those foods may cause a blood sugar crash later in the day.

Have a healthy breakfast and both you and your child will feel and perform better all day long!
